Aerodynamics and performance of turbomachines
The goal of this course is to offer an overview of the aerodynamics and performance of turbomachines. The different types of turbomachinery components will be presented, with a view on applications.
The course duration is 4.5 days (29 hours) and will include:
- 15 hours of class
- 13 hours of hands-on course
- 1 round-table discussion
The course aims at providing basic elements and building blocks for the analysis of the flows encountered in industrial turbomachinery components. The focus is on the physical understanding of phenomenon rather than theoretical developments.
For each application type (compressors, turbines, propellers), we will start from a global performance approach, putting in perspective the different operating regimes of the machines, to finally achieve a local analysis of the flow aerodynamics (incidence and Mach number effects, flow structures, losses…).
During hands-on classes, experimental as well as numerical (CFD) data will serve as supports to the analysis.
Level: Base / Intermediate
The course is aimed at industrials or academics with basic knowledge of fluid mechanics, and wanting to extend their application field to rotating machinery (turbomachines and propellers).

- Upstream/downstream 1-D global analysis
- Meridian analysis
- Velocity diagrams and Euler theorem
- Presentation of machine types
- Simple propellers, fast propellers (open rotors or CROR)
- Axial and centrifugal compressors
- Axial and radial turbines
- 1-D design of blades
- Analysis of turbofan test-rig measurements
- Analysis of numerical simulation results
- A round table discussion will end the course
