Navigation, positioning, location - 2021

Navigation and guidance systems

This course is for engineers who want to acquire a basic knowledge of navigation techniques. It covers the in-system use of navigation methods and means. Also covered are the increasing roles of navigation and localization in complex weapon systems and associated future prospects. Guiding is covered through two presentations.

The course lasts 5 days (32 hours) and includes:

  • A general introduction
  • 19 illustrated lectures
  • 2 sessions with navigation filter simulations
  • An overview of the laboratories at the Centre DGA/Maitrise de L’information in BRUZ

This course partly covers the themes presented in the second part of course ARF 011, previously scheduled over 10 days.

It completes these and finishes with the global concept of navigation systems with an overview of guidance systems.

The various types of navigational means are covered first, including inertial navigation, followed by the way in which these different means are hybridized in a navigation system, as well as the associated filtering techniques. Finally, the increasing role of navigation and localization in modern weapon systems, taking into account interoperability constraints, the development of satellite radionavigation and the evolution of automation. Many applications are presented to illustrate this point. A visit to the laboratories and testing facilities at DGA/Maitrise de L'information helps concretely illustrate the various points discussed.

Course level: Basic/Advanced

It is desirable that the participants have an understanding of the principles of inertial systems, summarized briefly at the beginning of the course. Previous completion of ARF 011 or equivalent is necessary. It is also desirable for participants to have an understanding of the principles of probability and random variables.
