Applications for satellite navigation

Transport, geodesy, agriculture, the environment, safety.

OBJECTIVE :

This course outlines the performance capabilities of satellite navigation systems and their applications.

Participants will know the principles of position calculation, sources of errors and solutions for increasing performance. This knowledge is necessary for developers to create applications integrating positioning solutions provided by GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems). By combining the range of uses, prescribers will appreciate the benefits of these applications for improving and optimizing the services they are responsible for.

Course level: Basic

No specific knowledge of the field is necessary.

GENERAL APPROACH :

The course is designed to provide broad information (principles, conditions of use, markets, etc.) on new applications of satellite positioning and their potential benefits.

It discusses operational applications and those under development.

This concerns government consultants, decision-makers and local authorities as well as solution designers and developers.

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Basic

No specific knowledge of the field is necessary but maths basics are useful for understanding how performance is calculated.

    • GNSS systems (GPS, EGNOS, GALILEO)
  • Features of GNSS systems
    • Signal and receiver architecture
    • Performance criteria: accuracy, availability, continuity, integrity
    • Types of service
  • Performance limitations and augmentation
    • Limitations of GNSS systems in constrained environments (urban environments, building interiors)
    • Augmentation solutions (additional sensors, hybridization, etc.)
    • Positioning/telecommunications integration
  • Applications for vehicles and transport
    • Positioning and navigation of land and aeronautical vehicles
    • Fleet and traffic management, vehicle traffic optimization, freight tracking
    • Examples of application
  • Applications for user mobility
    • Leisure, tourism
    • Safety, civil protection, firefighters
    • Personal assistance services
    • Examples of application
