Sub- and transonic aerodynamics

OBJECTIVE :

This course aims to introduce digital and experimental tools for subsonic and transonic flow studies.

The main aerodynamic characteristics will be covered for certain types of aircraft with a look at their specific issues and the current research routes.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMETABLE :

The course lasts 5 days (30 hours) and includes:

  • 14 lectures
  • 1 visit to the Chalais-Meudon wind tunnel at ONERA

GENERAL APPROACH :

Theoretical developments are limited to a minimum; however, a significant part focuses on the applications and provides participants with an overview of the performance and aerodynamic problems of the main types of aircraft.

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Advanced

This course is intended for engineers and senior technicians with basic knowledge of fluid mechanics or aerodynamics wishing to update or supplement their knowledge of sub- and transonic aerodynamics.

Prior completion of course FMA 006 "Introduction to aerodynamics" or equivalent knowledge is recommended.

      • Different limitation models
    • Main sources of non-linearity
      • Description and consequences (impact, viscous effects, turbulence, detachment, vortices)
    • Digital simulation of aeroelastic effects
  • Experimental aerodynamics
    • Main testing and measurement techniques
    • Correction of test results: correction of effects of walls, supports
    • Visit to the Chalais-Meudon wind tunnel at ONERA
  • Applications
    • Subsonic transport aircraft
      • Different types, drag assessment, fineness, radius of action, balancing, lift augmentation, different interactions, engines installation, drag reduction
    • Combat aircraft
      • Different types
      • Maneuverability, controlling major impacts, carrying loads
    • Sub- and transonic missiles
      • Different types
      • Balancing, steering, induced rolls
    • Propeller helicopters
      • Unsteady problems, vapor trail and interactions
    • Turbomachinery
