Concepts and applications


Software radio transceivers allow the analysis and synthesis of real signals at the "nearest antenna", usually over a wide frequency range and with a high sampling rate. As such, the processing specific to each application is mainly performed "digitally" via software developments, which gives the software radio a great deal of flexibility. In addition, the evolution of development libraries positions software radio as an essential tool when dealing with the prototyping, qualification or production of radiocommunication applications.

This course outlines the specific features of software radio transceivers (architecture, discrete time algorithms) and carries out real end-to-end processing chains through several sessions of practical work in GNURadio and Matlab using NI USRP transceivers.


The course lasts 5 days (35 hours).

  • Distribution : course (14 hours) and practical work (21 hours).


The course aims to put communication chains into practice using software radio transceivers. For this, a theoretical analysis is used to reframe conventional signal processing issues in telecommunications in order to deal with the constraints of software radio: (i) discrete time processing; (ii) asynchronous acquisition; (iii) compensation for imperfections of microwave components. Numerous demonstrations and practical work are used to apply these concepts using RALF (RAdio Logicielle pour la Formation), the educational software defined radio platform. In particular, USRP National Instrument transceivers and the GNURadio and Matlab development environments will be used.


Course level: Advanced

Basic knowledge of signal processing and digital communications is required as well as an understanding of the usual signal processing operations in Matlab. Profile: R&D engineers.

    • Practical work: simulation of QPSK modulation on an AWGN channel in Matlab and GNURadio
    • Study of the main synchronization algorithms in frequency, phase and timing
    • Practical work: complete creation and characterization of a QPSK transmission chain in GNURadio
