FMECA methodology

For the design of mechanical products

OBJECTIVE :

This course will enable learners to acquire knowledge and practice of the FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis) methodology, the basic tool for ensuring the inclusion of a quality process in the design of products and optimizing their operational safety.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMETABLE :

The course lasts 3 days (18 hours) and includes:

  • 5 hours of lectures
  • 13 hours of group exercises
  • 5 hours of panel discussion

GENERAL APPROACH :

The purpose of this course is to present the FMECA methodology and its practical application methods within companies, both from the point of view of in-house production and the validation of FMECA carried out by suppliers.

In terms of the product design and manufacture, it supplements course SYI 012 internship "Value analysis and design for an objective cost".

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Basic

The course is for engineers, engineering design managers/supervisors and technicians working in methods, manufacturing, quality and purchasing, and with experience of industrial life.

COURSE DIRECTOR(S) :

Claude CARUEL:

Consultant, former process expert at RENAULT.

CONTENT :

  • The concept of total quality
    • From need to product, the stages of design, validation and manufacturing
  • Function
    • Functional needs analysis and technique
    • Initiation exercise
  • The FMECA Methodology
    • Definition: FMECA is a participatory and multidisciplinary method based on pooling the experience and knowledge of the members of a working group
    • The choice of subjects to be dealt with in FMECA
    • Modes, causes of failure and their effects, their criticality
    • The criticality index, which incorporates the notions of severity, frequency and risk of non-detection of the failure
    • Decision-making and the construction of the action plan
    • Validation of corrective solutions and their verification in the field
  • The FMECA diagnostic methodology
    • Why validate an internal FMECA or one performed by a supplier?
    • Attitude and behavior of the analyst
    • Key points of the diagnostic grid
    • Application on two cases
  • How to apply FMECA
    • FMECA can be applied at two levels:
      • By verifying that the definition file is satisfactory with respect to the functions that the product must fulfill - this is the PRODUCT FMECA
      • By validating the entire manufacturing process of the product - this is the PROCESS FMECA
  • Application in an industrial context
    • Example in the automotive field

Comment:

The overview and applications of FMECA deal with predominantly mechanical topics, integrating customer service functions.
