Aeronautical engineering - 2020 Revised

Introduction to aircraft design

OBJECTIVE :

This course allows learners to gain knowledge of the various phases of development of commercial transport aircraft, from the preliminary phases to aircraft going live.  The organization, skills, resources and planning necessary for aircraft development will be covered, along with a detailed look at the groundwork required before aircraft can be certified and flown by an airline.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMETABLE :

The course lasts 3 days (21 hours).

GENERAL APPROACH :

The development of a transport aircraft can be 'incremental' whereby the aircraft manufacturer starts with an existing aircraft and only modifies a part of it.  It can also be a completely new aircraft requiring complete end-to-end redesign.  This course addresses all the activities required of a manufacturer like Airbus for each aircraft program, from the initial idea to its use by an airline.

The course is intended for manager and non-managerial staff working in aeronautics with no special technical knowledge.  An ideal complement to aeronautical engineers' and technicians' knowledge.

The key components (structure, propulsion, systems) of an aircraft are described following a summary of the physical and mechanical laws.  There is also a review of the means and organization of aircraft development, as well as the development phases, from mass production, the crucial step of certification, up to the aircraft going live.

The course concludes with two case studies: incremental development (A320neo) and the development of a new aircraft (A350XWB).

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Basic

General training for non-technical personnel in the aeronautical field (planning, purchasing, finance, lawyers, assistants, etc.).  An ideal complement to aeronautical engineers' and technicians' knowledge.
