Performance capabilities and applications of radar

Basic principles for the preliminary design phase

OBJECTIVE :

This course is intended for system engineers as well as radar component specialists.

It provides an overview of radar in four areas: physical principles, theory, technology and application techniques, which will be explored according to a comprehensive and coherent program.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMETABLE :

The course lasts 9.5 days (59 hours) over two non-consecutive weeks organized as follows:

1st part (5 days)

  • 14 x 1.5-hours lectures
  • 9 hours of lecturer-led exercises

2nd part (4.5 days)

  • 9 x 1.5-hours lectures
  • 5 hours of lecturer-led exercises
  • 1 visit to a radar facility
  • 1 recap lecture

Learners are required to bring a pocket scientific calculator.

GENERAL APPROACH :

The course is for engineers or technicians with a basic knowledge of electronics and who work in a field where radars are used.

It provides an understanding of the radar phenomena, the possibilities of these systems and the constraints governing them today and in the near future.

Key features:

  • Practical applications (tutorials) making up a large part of the course
  • Visit to a radar integration site

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Basic/Advanced

The course is open to engineers or senior technicians with basic knowledge of mathematics and physics. Knowledge of probabilities (basic theorems, functions), Fourier transforms and the integration of usual and exponential functions are a plus but not essential.

    • Features of radar receivers
    • Antennas used in radar
    • Electronic scanning and active antennas

2nd PART

  • Radar functionalities
    • Distance tracking and angular tracking
    • Visualization of moving targets
    • Principles of radar electronic warfare
  • Introduction to modern concepts
    • Airborne Doppler - Pulse radar systems
    • High resolution radar systems
    • Pulse compression, correlation

           : 2nd part: 20 to 24 April 2020
