Effects of space environment on electronic components
This training will allow listeners to know the effects of space radiation environment on electronic components in order to better take into account the constraints in the design or development of a project related to space.
The training last 2.5 days (15 hours) and is composed of :
- 4 talks with a duration of 3 hours
- 1 practical work of simulation with a duration of 3 hours
The space environment is well known to be an aggressive environment in terms of radiations. From the perspective of cost reduction it is very important to better specify constraints while controlling margins.
This course allows to understand the various radiative constraints affecting the embedded electronic components and to consider appropriate optimization solutions.
A university technical basic training or engineering school is desirable to take full advantage of this training.
ONERA Senior Research (MR2)

- Course No. 1 (3h): Space radiation environment
- The sun (radiation emitted and dynamic)
- Cosmic rays
- The radiation belts (description, dynamics and environmental specifications according to orbits)
- Course No. 2 (3h): radiation matter interaction
- Review of the various types of radiation-matter interaction
- Definition of ionizing dose
- Definition of the atomic displacements dose
- Definition of a LET spectrum
- Effects on electronic components (ionizing and non-ionizing dose and singular events)
- Course No. 3 (3h): Definition of radiation specifications for a given mission with the OMERE engineering software
- Environments calculations along different orbits
- Ionizing doses curves calculations
- Singular events rate calculations
- Course No. 4 (3h): Protect or shield (optimized manner without unnecessary excess weight) an equipment or a component to a certain level of radiation
- Mechanical shields and impact on radiation effects
- Shieldings efficiency according to the mission
- Impact of the location in the satellite and 3D models
- Optimal location of the shielding
- Example with a radiation calculation and shielding tool, FASTRAD
- Course No. 5 (3h): Qualify component to radiations for a project
- Reminders on the effects of radiation on components
- Effects feared by type of component and technology
- Radiation hardening assurance from phase 0 (mission analysis) to Phase C (detailed design)
- Norms used in practice for projects (hardening assurance ECSS Q-60-15, test specifications)
- Guidance as to how and where to carry out a test, to make a calculation of received dose levels, to estimate an occurrence rate in orbit
- Analyze the results and decide, pitfalls
