Adaptive antennae: application to detection, location and communications

OBJECTIVE :

The course helps learners:

  • Become familiar with the main concepts of adaptive antennas, from the most conventional to the most advanced
  • Discover and master the main functions of adaptive antennas and study their performance and implementation for different application contexts
  • Broaden their application to two of the following areas:
    • Radar and sonar detection
    • Communication
    • Satellite location

COURSE DURATION AND TIMETABLE :

The course lasts 5 days (35 hours) and includes:

  • A core curriculum of 3 days (including 2 hours of PC-based demos)
  • A 2-days application option

Learners specify their option when applying

GENERAL APPROACH :

This course outlines the constituents, operating principles, uses, performance and applications of informed or self-taught spatial structure or space-time adaptive antennas (AA).

Applications of adaptive antennas:

  • For radar (ground and airborne) and sonar (active and passive)
  • For communications (satellite, GSM cellular, UMTS, 4G and 5G, WLAN)

are addressed separately in both options.

The application of adaptive antennas:

  • For satellite location (GPS, Galileo)

is covered in the core curriculum.

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Basic/Advanced

This course is suitable for engineers with basic knowledge of antenna and signal processing.

    • Benefits, functions, constituents, technologies, taxonomy, applications, history
  • Modeling, tools and networks
    • Sources, waves, sensors, polarization, network
    • Narrow band and broadband observations
    • Statistical tools (moments, cumulants, circularity, cyclostationary, etc.)
    • Algebraic tools (EVD, SVD)
    • Space diversity, diagrams, polarization networks
    • Ambiguities
    • Weighted networks, Shannon spatial theorem
  • Spatial structure informed adaptive antennas
    • Channel formation or electronic scanning
    • Opposition in secondary lobes
    • Power inversion, spatial matched filter
    • Performance, adaptive implementations (gradient, least squares), operational robustness
  • Self-taught adaptive antennas
    • Blind separation of order 2 sources and higher order sources. Instant and convolutive mixtures. Implementation. Performance
  • Application to anti-jamming GPS and Galileo

 

OPTION 1 - DETECTION

  • Application of spatial AA to anti-jamming of ground and airborne radars
  • Application of STAP processing to the detection of weak mobile targets for airborne radars
  • MIMO Radar concepts
  • Application of ST AA to noise reduction, anti-jamming and active and passive sonar decelerating

 

OPTION 2 - COMMUNICATION

  • Application of spatial AA to satellite communications
  • Application of self-taught AA to HF passive listening
  • ST AA for multipath communications:
    • Diversity of reception and transmission
    • MLSE, MMSE receivers, anti-jammed synchronization
  • Application to GSM and UMTS cellular networks
    • Metrology and multiple access to spatial distribution
  • MIMO systems for high-speed communications (4G)
    • Capacity, ST coding, spatial multiplexing, joint demodulation, implementation, performance
  • Single Antenna Interference Cancellation (SAIC)
    • LSL filtering, GSM application
  • MU-MIMO systems for 5G
