Ground-to-air communications for civil aviation


Ground-to-air communications for civil aviation are developing very rapidly with the introduction of data links and the implementation of digital services. In particular, air traffic control procedures will increasingly integrate data exchanges, either in automatic form (Automatic Dependent Surveillance or ADS-B/C, for example) or interactively (controller-pilot data link communication or CPDLC).

The aim of the course is to understand the characteristics of the systems currently being deployed or in the finalization phase with regard to standards and specifications. The characteristics of the radio channel in the context of aeronautical communications is analyzed. The issue of digital communications (modulations, coding, receiver architecture) will then be examined, including the use of software radio for the capture and analysis of real signals over the entire HF-VHF-UHF frequency range. The performance of access methods will also be looked at using discrete event simulation models.


The course lasts 4 days (24 hours).


The course aims to provide an understanding of the constraints of digital communications systems for civil aviation and enables an analysis of deployment scenarios. The lectures are accompanied by experiments with software radio resources (reception of real signals and analysis via Gnuradio) or practical work (OMNET++ simulation models).


Course level : Advanced

Basic knowledge of signal processing and digital communications is required to fully benefit from the course.

  • Practical applications on a software radio platform (use of the RALF platform: reception antennas deployed at ISAE-SUPAERO, National Instruments signal scanning boxes, workstations for Gnuradio software processing)

Access techniques and performance of data networks

  • Random access analysis, application to the VHF VDL Mode 2 data link
  • Access techniques for satellite links, description of the AMSS system and analysis of the definition of the IRIS system
  • LDACS and HFDL data link architecture
  • Implementation by network-oriented simulation (OMNET++ discrete event simulation tool)
