Aeronautical materials

OBJECTIVE :

At the end of this summary course, participants will have covered the design, development, quality assurance, manufacture and maintenance of aeronautical structures (aircraft, engines, civil or military helicopters) as well as launchers and missiles.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMETABLE :

The course lasts 10 days (65 hours) divided into two parts and includes:

  • 24 lectures between 1.5 and 3.5 hours
  • 3 visits to industrial sites
  • 1 discussion and recap session

GENERAL APPROACH :

This summary course focuses on the materials used for aircraft structures and engines and emphasizes the links existing between the development, the properties of use and the implementation of the different classes of materials.

Each category of metallic or non-metallic materials (organic and ceramic) is examined both theoretically and practically by specialists from the aerospace industry and the main producers of "aeronautical" materials.

Particular focus is placed on the conditions of use, the selection criteria and the damage processes, all with a wide range of illustrations of existing or developing applications as well as the sharing of experience from the experts involved.

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Basic

The course requires no special knowledge and is accessible to all engineers and senior technicians with a good educational background.

    • Aluminum alloys - Steels - Titanium alloy
    • Physical metallurgy and development
    • Properties, optimization of heat treatment according to the classes and form of the alloys:
      • Sheet, plate, profile, forged-die-cast, cast, etc.

    • Basic knowledge of the constituents:
      • Carbon fiber, glass

    • Implementation, (polymerization, draping, injection, RTM) and repairs
    • Examples of new applications and trends
  • New hybrid or "exotic" materials

    • New metal alloys with Ni, Co, etc., base
    • Ceramics and composites with ceramic matrix
    • Properties and potential uses of these materials
  • Mechanics of materials - Fatigue - Mechanics of rupture - Expertise of fractures
    • Recap of basic knowledge (metallic and composite materials) - Practical examples
