Assembly technologies using structural adhesion


This course covers with the basic multi-disciplinary knowledge regarding the implementation of structural adhesion technology.  The objective is to offer participants an overall understanding of the issues related to adhesion.


The course lasts 5 days (30 hours) and includes 5 practical work sessions.


Structural adhesion is an assembly technology that, in order to be used, involves an integrated multidisciplinary team. The approach proposed as part of this training aims to cover all aspects:

  • materials and processes
  • mechanical analysis
  • implementation and testing

Implementation and testing are illustrated through the section on repairs.


Course level: Basic

This course is intended for technical and scientific/design staff or laboratory personnel. Basic knowledge of materials science and materials resistance is required.

Course co-facilitated by a team of research professors from CIRIMAT/INP-ENSIACET, ICA/ISAE-SUPAERO and ICA/Université Toulouse 3.


  • Introduction to the general problems of adhesion
    • Theories of adhesion, classes of adhesives, installation of adhered joints, discussion
  • Synthesis of poly-epoxy
    • Primary components and formulation additives, epoxide-amine reactions, kinetic polymerization monitoring, discussion. Practical work on the synthesis of polyepoxy and characterization by FTIR and DSC
  • Amine-epoxy/metal interphases
    • Definition of interphases, formation of interphases, influences on the properties of adhered joints, discussion
  • Surface treatments
    • Non-exhaustive list of surface treatments, influence on adhesion and properties of adhered joints, discussion
  • Characterization of adhesion
    • Key parameters during adhesion tests, non-exhaustive list of adhesion tests, discussion. Practical work on the experimental measurement of adhesion
  • Mechanical behavior analysis
    • The aim is to understand the transfer of force to the connection. For this, the modeling principles are presented as well as EF analytical and semi-analytical resolution methods, enabling the observation of the distribution of adhesive stresses. The application to bolted/adhered hybrid assemblies is looked at. Many exercises are included
  • Mechanical testing
    • The objective is to present various standardized or non-standardized experimental tests used to characterize the mechanical behavior until adhered assemblies are fractured. A summary of mechanical behavior analysis, which provides input data for holding criteria, and mechanical tests
  • Real and virtual mechanical tests
    • Practical work: manufacturing a metallic test composite repaired with an adhered patch and statically testing it then comparing those results with the predictions from the analysis
  • Reparation issues
    • The aim is to look at patch repairs on metal and composite structures used in the aerospace industry. An overview of composite repairs on fuselage-type structures will be given
  • Introduction to testing
    • The aim is to demonstrate the capacity of the current testing resources to qualify the adhesion conformity and quality. This part is delivered as a practical work session on US testing and RX of test pieces repaired by adhered patches
