Spatial telecommunications

OBJECTIVE :

This course explores the specific aspects of sizing satellite telecommunication links by examining constraints and associated techniques.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMETABLE :

The course lasts 5 days (33.5 hours) and includes:

  • 20 x 1.5-hours lectures
  • 2 x 1.5-hours of engineering design
  • Debate/panel discussion

Learners are required to bring a pocket scientific calculator.

GENERAL APPROACH :

Satellite telecommunication systems employ a wide variety of techniques. This course focuses on communications techniques and payload technologies.

Throughout the week, technical objectives, current and future solutions and their implications for the entire system are analyzed.

Teaching through lectures and engineering design sessions enables learners to explore the orders of magnitude of the determining parameters and performance capabilities.

Access techniques for satellite communications systems are presented in detail in ELA 023.

Learners interested in other aspects of satellite communications systems (spacecraft, environment, etc.) can refer to courses AED 012 or AED 013 in satellite design.

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Advanced

Basic knowledge in signal processing or telecommunications: signal, modulation, coding, etc., is desirable to fully benefit from this course (graduate-level university or engineering school).
