Project management for civil vessels

OBJECTIVE :

This course enables engineers or technicians to learn how to carry out projects for large civilian vessels or floating craft and to acquire basic knowledge of naval architecture.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMETABLE :

The course lasts 6 days (36 hours). It is divided into 2 parts of 2 and 3 days, each day including two sessions of three hours.

GENERAL APPROACH :

The training takes place in three stages:

The first part begins with a broad overview of the world fleet illustrating the essential maritime role in the market economy of goods and services. The issues related to the various stages of a project are then discussed, from the expression of need to delivery of the ship.

The second part, after a recap of the main methods of design, the naval architecture rules are applied step by step in order to arrive at the complete definition of the ship at the pre-project stage. The approach is put into practice through different examples of typical ships.

The last sequence covers the cost price for the shipyard and the return on investment for the client/contractor.

The course alternates lectures, theory and tutorials.

PREREQUISITE :

Course level: Basic

Experience of the maritime sector (navigation, operation, shipbuilding) would be beneficial.

Twenty-five years of international design and shipbuilding experience with major shipowners, architects and shipyards.

Lecturer in naval architecture and maritime economy, especially in the Marine Engineering section of Ensta at L'École Centrale.

  • The successive phases of the design:
    • Determining the main characteristics: displacement, length, width, draft, trough, freeboard, form coefficients
    • Estimation of resistance and propulsive power
    • Choice of machine architecture and propulsion
    • Auxiliary definition and power assessment
    • Preliminary weight estimate
    • Geometry from the cut to the master
    • Overall distribution of volumes and spaces
    • Simplified forms of hull and curve of the areas
  • Economic analysis of the project:
    • Cost of construction
    • The ship charter market
    • Operating expenses
    • Profitability of investments
  • Applications:
    • 300,000 t deadweight oil tanker
    • 160,000 m3 gas transport vessel
    • Container ship of 4,100 teu
    • Offshore support vessel
