DVB standards and their implementation


Telecommunication satellites offer a unique capability to ensure users' connectivity to the Internet wherever terrestrial infrastructure is either insufficient or impossible to deploy. This service is based on specific techniques to provide both high speeds, good availability and a user experience as close as possible to that provided by terrestrial networks. This course focuses on access techniques for multimedia satellite communications systems (radio resource management, waveform adaptability to propagation conditions, multiple access, dynamic capacity allocation procedures) and integration into the Internet (adaptation of TCP/IP protocols, differentiated quality of service). Particular emphasis will be on geostationary satellite systems operating at high frequencies (above 20 GHz).



The training program is scheduled over 5 days (30 hours) and is composed of:

  • 21 hours of presentations
  • 9.5 hours of practical work in the computer room


This training session is for engineers who wish to acquire knowledge about the scaling of satellite systems for Internet and multimedia applications. Emphasis will be on access techniques, taking into account the adaptive techniques imposed on the physical link by high frequencies.The influence on the quality of service offered by the higher layer protocols (typically IP) will be analyzed. Systems derived from the DVB standards of ETSI (DVB-S, S2, and RCS2) will be used to introduce and illustrate the various access techniques. The practical work sessions use the OMNET++ modeling and simulation tool.


Course level : Advanced

Knowledge of space systems is desirable but not essential.

A basic knowledge of telecommunications networks is desirable.
